Arts Definition
Art today means a genre of techniques from dance to sculpting. Similarly to Diderot and d’Alembert Article on Art, there are two “division(s) if the arts (,) liberal and mechanical arts.” Art is an interpretation of “observations on the nature, function, use and qualities of beings and their symbols.” People use Art as an expression of emotions that cannot be shown through voice. People need to “show” others how life to them is portrayed. Art has been in-placed in cultures dating back to ancient times. In general purpose, Art is for man to interpret as “man is only the minister or interpreter of nature…Man is capable of everything or nothing, depending on whether it is or is not possible to bring objects closer or move them farther away.”
Those who create art are called artists, they are the masterful interpreters of life, and they hold a piece of the key to understanding life and its confusing nature. Today you can enter a workshop, studio, gallery or an art museum with various exhibits that show an artist “technique” and portrayal of a part of life. For example you could walk into a Joan Miro’s exhibit and see large canvases with mere simple lines in reds and blues and circles and have no idea what the meaning is or the emotion evoked or technique needed to paint some lines. His work is called “Spanish Surrealist. ” You would think looking at his work that Miro could not explain himself; you would think he is mad. Though the reason for his work in fact is that “The spectacle of the sky overwhelms me. I'm overwhelmed when I see, in an immense sky, the crescent of the moon, or the sun. There, in my pictures, tiny forms in huge empty spaces. Empty spaces, empty horizons, empty plains - everything which is bare has always greatly impressed me.” Like the Diderot and d’Alembert article says, “only an artist who can think logically can talk well about his art.” Lesson learned: most artists can explain their work, even though who paint a single green line across a canvas.
Art is a “science”, today and many years ago. The term has not change. Its still a broad, opinionated subject universally known to all with many genres intermixed. We still define art with subtitles like the geometry of art, the speculative and practical aspects of an art, the language of the arts, and so on. Art still can be defined with seven pages just touching the surface of its depth.
